What Doesn’t Change in a World of AI
When we think about history, we naturally notice change. An American farmer in 1800 lived in a world without electricity, automobiles, airplanes, telephones, antibiotics, radio, television, computers, or the internet. Agriculture employed most of the American workforce, while today it employs only a tiny fraction.
People traveled at approximately the same speed humans had traveled for thousands of years. Today, we routinely cross oceans in hours. Information that once took weeks to travel around the world now moves almost instantaneously.
And now artificial intelligence promises another enormous transformation. But concentrating entirely on what changes obscures something equally important. An extraordinary amount about human life does not change.
The technologies change. The institutions change. The occupations change. The methods change. But many of the fundamental things human beings are trying to accomplish remain remarkably persistent.
Health Was Important Before Medicine
Health is an obvious example. A person living 2,000 years ago knew almost nothing about bacteria, viruses, blood pressure, cholesterol, genetics, or cancer biology. He couldn't have an MRI. He couldn't take antibiotics. He couldn't measure his blood glucose or have a coronary artery bypass.
But he cared enormously about his health. He didn't want to be sick. He didn't want to experience pain. He wanted his injuries to heal. He wanted to remain physically capable. He wanted his children to survive. And he didn't want to die.
Those objectives haven't changed. Healthy aging isn't a modern invention either. Humans have always experienced declining strength, mobility, appearance, and capability as they aged. They have always looked for ways to preserve what they could.
Modern medicine has radically changed what can be done about these problems. It hasn't eliminated the problems themselves.
People still become sick. People still age. People still die. The solution space changed enormously. The underlying objective barely changed at all.
We Still Want to Be Attractive
Consider appearance. Standards of beauty vary across periods and cultures. Clothing changes. Hairstyles change. Cosmetics change. Body ideals change. But the desire to be attractive is ancient.
Young people want to be attractive. Older people want to remain attractive. People compare themselves with others, and they care how others perceive them. They use clothing, grooming, jewelry, exercise, cosmetics, and countless other tools to influence that perception.
A Roman aristocrat and a modern Instagram user might have almost nothing in common technologically. Psychologically, they might recognize each other surprisingly well. The tools are different. The desire isn't.
We Still Want Other People to Think Well of Us
The same is true of status and approval. Human beings want self-esteem, but most also care about the opinions of other people. We want respect, recognition, belonging, prestige, affection, and admiration. We want to know where we stand relative to others.
The mechanisms through which those desires are expressed change enormously. A warrior might once have sought battlefield glory. An aristocrat displayed land and titles. A merchant displayed wealth. An academic seeks professional recognition. A teenager counts followers. A businessperson watches the value of a company.
Different scoreboards, but similar human motivations. Social media didn't invent the desire for social approval. It created a new mechanism for measuring and pursuing something humans already wanted.
Shakespeare Hasn't Become Obsolete
Art provides an extraordinary demonstration of the persistence of human concerns. Shakespeare wrote more than four centuries ago, yet people still read and perform his work. Why? Not because modern audiences are fascinated by Elizabethan transportation technology. The plays survive because the people survive.
Jealousy makes Othello intelligible. Ambition makes Macbeth intelligible. Love and family conflict make Romeo and Juliet intelligible. Aging, pride, inheritance, loyalty, and betrayal make King Lear intelligible. The political institutions surrounding Shakespeare's characters may be foreign to us.
Their motivations aren't. Jane Austen provides another example. Her characters inhabit a social environment dramatically different from ours, yet her novels remain popular because attraction, courtship, money, social position, family expectations, misunderstanding, pride, and the difficulty of judging other people remain completely recognizable.
The persistence of great literature is itself evidence of the persistence of human nature. If human motivations changed as quickly as technology, old literature would become incomprehensible. Instead, we recognize ourselves in people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Music Survives for the Same Reason
Musical technology has changed spectacularly. Humans once had only the sounds they could produce physically in the place where they happened to be. Then came increasingly sophisticated instruments, notation, mechanical reproduction, records, radio, magnetic tape, digital recording, and streaming. Now generative AI can produce music.
Yet humans have valued music for thousands of years. Technology changed how music is produced, distributed, and consumed. It did not eliminate the desire for music. In fact, technological improvement generally allowed humans to consume more of it. The same pattern appears repeatedly. Technology doesn't necessarily replace a human desire. Often, it gives that desire more ways to express itself.
The Basic Subjects of Life Are Surprisingly Stable
Look at the subjects that dominate human storytelling. Romance, sex, family, friendship, conflict, money, power, status, health, adventure, fear, betrayal, aging, death, and purpose. These themes appear in ancient mythology, religious texts, Greek drama, Shakespeare, nineteenth-century novels, twentieth-century movies, and twenty-first-century streaming television.
The costumes change. The scenery changes. The technology changes. The underlying story often doesn't. A modern romantic comedy and an ancient story about courtship may be separated by thousands of years of technological development. Both still depend upon the fact that human beings want other human beings.
Technology Usually Serves Old Desires
This provides another way to understand technological innovation. People don't generally desire technology for its own sake. They desire what technology allows them to accomplish. Humans didn't possess an ancient biological desire for automobiles. They wanted to move, and automobiles provided a better solution. Humans didn't possess an innate desire for telephones. They wanted to communicate with people who weren't physically present. They didn't inherently want refrigerators. They wanted food to remain edible. They didn't inherently want Google. They wanted information.
They didn't inherently want smartphones. They wanted communication, information, entertainment, convenience, social connection, and status. The technology was revolutionary. The desires it served often weren't. This suggests a useful distinction: Technology changes the solution space much faster than it changes the human objective function. That distinction becomes particularly important as we enter the age of artificial intelligence.
What Will People Want From AI?
AI seems unprecedented because its capabilities are unprecedented. But listen to what people actually ask it to do. They ask it to help them understand what's wrong with them, become healthier, remain capable as they get older, make money, find a job, start a business, understand another person, raise a child, become more attractive, learn something, decide whom to trust, resolve a disagreement, create something beautiful, find someone to love, or decide what to do next. These are not AI-age problems. They are human problems. AI represents a radically different instrument for addressing them.
This Matters for the Future of Work
This distinction also changes how we should think about AI and employment. There is understandable concern that AI will eliminate large amounts of human work. But employment ultimately exists because people want things, and many of those wants have proved extraordinarily durable.
If AI makes accounting dramatically cheaper, humans don't therefore lose their desire for better health. If AI makes software dramatically cheaper, people don't stop wanting attractive homes. If AI automates administrative work, people don't stop wanting entertainment. If AI reduces the cost of legal analysis, people don't stop wanting travel, restaurants, exercise, personal attention, education, or social status. Resources released from one activity can migrate toward another.
This is essentially what happened with agriculture. As agricultural productivity increased, America didn't need to invent a new biological need to employ the people who were no longer required to grow food. People already wanted enormous numbers of other things. As society became wealthier, it could afford more of them.
The Demand May Be Nearly Unlimited
This is one reason predictions about technological unemployment are so difficult. Many human desires don't appear to have obvious saturation points.
How much health would people like? Usually more. How long would people like to remain physically capable? Usually longer. How much entertainment would they consume if it were cheaper and better? Apparently quite a lot.
Would people like more attractive homes, more travel, better education, more personalized attention, more convenient services, better physical fitness, better food, more interesting experiences, more status, stronger relationships, or more time? The practical demand for improvements in human life may be enormous.
What constrains us is frequently not desire. It is scarcity. We have limited money, limited labor, limited knowledge, limited physical resources, and limited time. Technology changes many of those constraints.
One Scarcity Has Proved Particularly Stubborn
There is one constraint technological progress has not fundamentally eliminated. A human lifetime remains finite. We have become much better at preventing premature death. Medicine can extend life. Technology can save time. But every individual still has a limited quantity of life within which to pursue everything else. That makes time different from many other resources.
We can produce more food. We can manufacture more goods. We can generate more information. We can create more computational capacity. We cannot manufacture another century of youth for someone who has already used their first century.
That makes the question of how technology helps people allocate their limited lives especially important. AI may ultimately matter less because it can generate text or write computer code than because it can help individuals make better decisions about what to do with their finite time.
Two Histories Are Happening at Once
We can therefore think of human history as two overlapping processes. The first is extraordinarily dynamic: the history of means. Tools improve. Knowledge accumulates. Institutions evolve. Transportation accelerates. Communication becomes cheaper. Machines become more capable. AI becomes more intelligent.
The second moves much more slowly: the history of ends. Stay alive. Remain healthy. Find love. Protect your family. Acquire resources. Gain respect. Belong. Create. Experience beauty. Avoid suffering. Find purpose. Use your time well.
The interaction between these two histories is where much of human progress occurs. Rapidly changing capabilities are continually applied to comparatively persistent human objectives.
The Farmer and the Smartphone User
Put an American farmer from 1800 beside a smartphone user from 2026. Their environments would seem almost impossibly different. But allow them to talk long enough and something interesting would happen.
They could discuss their children, their health, their work, money, marriage, people they disliked, people they admired, whether they were getting old, what they wanted their children to become, whether other people respected them, what they feared, and what they hoped would happen next.
The farmer might not understand a smartphone. But he would understand the person holding it. That may be one of the most important things to remember as AI accelerates technological change.
We are entering a world of tools unlike anything humans have previously possessed. But those tools will be placed in the hands of creatures whose fundamental motivations are much older. The future may therefore be simultaneously radically unfamiliar and deeply familiar. The methods will change. The possibilities will change. The constraints will change. The tools will change. The human problems persist.
